There are four books in this series and I’ll be reviewing the next one in the series, “Dragon Haven,” next week. I’m so attached to her characters after a little more than 500 pages, there’s no way I’ve had enough of them after one book. Hobb’s “Rain Wilds Chronicles” reminds me why I love my books in series. He seems like such a nefarious person, but I think he has the potential to do good later in the series. I couldn’t help but feel sorry for Sedric a little. While the concept of watching characters change isn’t new, the characters are so wonderful and engaging it’s hard not to love them and want them to succeed in their journey. Seeing how the weak characters try to dominate one another in a semi-isolated group setting is fascinating. Each character starts the story weak in some way and strengthens a little as the book goes on. Overcoming weakness is a big theme in the first book. Conflict and adversity are thrown at a group of characters and the reader gets the pleasure of seeing how the characters handle it. Sintara is stubborn and high-maintenance. She also has difficulty getting along with her dragon, Sintara. Some portions of the book focus mainly on Thymara and her relationship with Tats, Rapskal and Greft, three other keepers. The idea behind the journey is that each keeper bonds with a dragon and helps the dragon hunt and cares for the dragon. It’s helpful because there are so many characters that it’s difficult to keep them straight. There’s a list of keepers and dragons at the beginning of the book. Sedric reminds Alise of her marriage vows and complains about the conditions on the ship.įifteen dragons are in the group, along with humans Thymara, Alum, Boxter, Greft, Jerd, Kase, Lecter, Nortel, Rapskal, Sylve, Tats and Warken. Alise falls in love with the boat’s captain, Leftrin.

The dragons claim they want to find Kelsingra, a legendary city full of meadows and places to hunt, where humans and dragons can live in harmony. The council sends orphans and unwanted townspeople upriver with the dragons and a boat. The reptiles have been a burden on the town. When Alise and Sedric arrive in the Rain Wilds, the council there decides to move the dragons. Though in his anger, he sends Sedric with her. Hest is furious that she wants to leave, but as part of their marriage contract, he agreed to let her study dragons. When she finds out dragons have hatched in the Rain Wilds, she sets off on a long trip to meet them. He’s interested in getting more money and he wants a wife who will wait around for him at home and eventually produce an heir, while he travels the world with his secretary, Sedric.Īlise studies dragonlore and purchases maps and scrolls to learn more about the origins of the species. While she’s swimming in money, her trader husband, Hest, is ambivalent-bordering-on-cruel to her.

I didn’t really get into the book until the chapter that introduced Alise, a wealthy young woman who marries a wealthy man, making her even wealthier. “Dragon Keeper” started out a little slow. It’s a shame because Hobb’s “Assassin’s Apprentice” trilogy is excellent. I do remember scouring every book store for the third book in that particular trilogy before finally buying it on Amazon. Though, I’ve read so much since then that I don’t really recall what it was about. I recognized “The Assassin’s Apprentice.” I read the trilogy years ago, and it was very good. I looked her up on GoodReads to see what else she’s written. I thought I recognized Robin Hobb’s name from something else I’ve read in the past. This week, she read “Dragon Keeper,” the first book in The Rain Wilds Chronicles by Robin Hobb.Īfter reading back-to-back dystopian adolescent trilogies, it was time for something with adventure and a heaping dose of dragons. You can read along with her, or add the books to your own reading list. Each Sunday, Caryn Rupert shares a book from a series.
